Hey captivators, are we ethical?

After captivators watched the video above, let's define ethic.

Ethic is the principles of right and wrong that affects one's behaviors. It is tightly affected by our knowledge. For instance, imagine that we know nothing about drugs, we  have never known that it will do harm to our body. We take in drugs as often as we breathe. We live in an environment where drugs are common, accepted and have been parts of our life. After we learnt, after we observe from a bigger circle of society, we at last find out that drugs are harmful and it has done no good to our life. That time, when we did not know that consuming drugs are no good, consuming drugs are still ethical. But at the moment that we learn more - as we have more knowledge about it - it turns out that we know it is not ethical. Therefore, whether something is ethical or not, it depends on the society, the place, the time, the context.

Is it important to be ethical? Do you think it is important? Or is it not?
Let's take a look on several important guidance related to ethic in an organization or society.

This is the golden rule.
Would you like to be punched? Would you like to be hurt? Or would you like someone humiliate you? Well, I would not like others to. Or would you? Thus, if you do not like others to do that to you, do not do it to them. If you want others to treat you in a good way, then start treating others in a good way too.

If an action is not right for everyone to take, it is not right for anyone.
You have to ask yourselves, if a certain thing will be a harm for the society in case everyone is doing it, then no one should do that. For instance, if it is not right for everyone to not pay the taxes, then it is not right for anyone to not pay the taxes.

If an action cannot be taken repeatedly, it is not right to take at all.
You know it best when you started a bad habit. You know that it is no good to take drugs, even one. It is just like a slippery-slop rule. You might not be able to stop your bad habit, you might never be able to quit your drinking problems, smoking or taking drugs. Therefore, it is better not to start those.

Achieve the action that achieves the greater or higher value.
In this case, we should prioritize which action have the higher value. We know that everything has its own consequences. Thus, by taking some actions, we know the consequences and also the benefits.

Take the action that produces the least harm or the least potential cost.
People have choices. From these choices, we have to choose the one with least potential cost or harm. As these actions that resulted from the choices might not harm only us, but also the society as a whole.

Assume that virtually all tangible and intangible objects are owned by someone else unless there is a specific declaration otherwise.
This is just the same as the ethical 'no free lunch' rule. Therefore, everybody should assume that something is owned by someone else. Thus, if we try to make use of something, we should at least appreciate and reward the owner or the creator.
Let's say you borrowed someone's motorcycle, at least fill the fuel for them after you have finished borrowing the motorcycle.


As the internet is getting more and more sophisticated, we might as well say that we are having more and more freedom. But are people using it ethically? There are several things related to the freedom in the internet age. One of the most important thing is the Intellectual Property Right. Have you heard about it before? You might not, but do you know copyright? patent? or trade secrets? Those are parts of intellectual property right -  a right given to the creator of the creation that they created intellectually. Are you confuse? Well, in other words, let's say someone created an invention on their own, with their brain work, then they have the rights to gain the Intellectual Property Rights and are able to exploit their own creation. What about those that exploit the creation of others? In Indonesia, it is regulated in the Constitution and Law. Therefore, be careful of what you do.

There has been pros and cons related to the freedom in the internet age, especially regarding the Intellectual Property Rights. Many people think that the internet is somehow promoting the violation of these rights. Movies are easily shared and downloadable. Songs are pirated. And also thousand other things that are considered piracy and violation to the rights. On the other hand, lots of internet's agents, including YouTube, Bloggers, etc. are also promoting the rights of the owner or creator of the Intellectual Property. Most of pirated songs and videos are eradicated from the YouTube. Regardless of these pros and cons, the only thing that we can do are using the internet wisely.
